Imagemakers 2009 National & Reginal Photography Contest Winners

Every Monday afternoon, I am blessed with the opportunity to work with the kids at the Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama teaching them photography. We recently entered some of their images in the Imagemakers / Boys & Girls Club Photography Contest. Amazingly, little 6 year old Eric Flagg won first place in the Southeast Regional – 35mm Black & White Contest and 10 year old, Felicia Drone won first place in the National – Photo Essay, 35mm Black & White Contest. Congratulations to them both!!! Just the opportunity to work with the kids is a treat, but winning adds the icing on the cake… SWEET!!! :-)

We Are Sooooo Blessed!

Yes, I am blessed and so are you!

It is not good to be proud and boastful, but it is important to recognize your blessings and thank God for them. Don’t down play your blessings instead walk in the light of each blessing. We are often guilty of not considering and celebrating how far we have come, but instead we reflect on where someone else is and get depressed. Coveting someone else’s blessing only dims the light you walk in. Often as we chase the next level of our hierarchy of wants and desires, we never really appreciate or celebrate our achievements and we never fully enjoy the present blessings we are walking in.

I once heard a famous retired athlete say, “Looking back at the age 20 if I knew it would be the last time I would make it to the championship game I would have enjoyed it more… win or loose!”

My word for the day is, appreciate and celebrate who we are at every stage/day of your life and you’ll never regret it… because you would have lived every stage/day to the fullest!

The Family: Living an Intentional Life

First, I would like to say what an awesome blessing and responsibility it is to start a family. A few years back, I took Terry and Sonya’s engagement photos. Now, they are expecting their first child. Congratulations are in order! I pray the two of you will have a very healthy boy and God’s blessings as you strive to raise him in the counsel of the Lord.

I would like to share some words of wisdom from my pastor’s message on last Sunday, titled, “The Family: Living an Intentional Life.” The message was given from Psalm 127:1-2:

“Except the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. 2 It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for He gives to His beloved sleep.”

For the family to live an intentional life, my pastor provided six “E” words:

1. Essential – The Person of the Lord. -- “Except the Lord” is the head of our homes, we are wasting time. There is NO substitute.

2. Establish – The Presence of the Lord. -- “Except the LORD builds”.
Notice the passage says “builds”, not “build”, meaning it is a continuous process. God wants to be involved in every aspect of each of our family’s lives.

3. Effort – Preserve in the Lord. -- “Except the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain”. This indicates to us that if we want a strong family we have to work at it, but we should not do it without God.

4. Empty – Purposeless without the Lord. -- “The watchmen waketh in vain…”
We can work hard to accumulate things, build a large home, etc., but without God our family’s lives will be still be empty and purposeless.

5. Eyes – Protection with the Lord. -- “The LORD keeps the city…”
This let’s us know God is the priority of our family. He watches over and protects each one of us from many dangers, seen and unseen.

6. Ease – Peace with the Lord. -- “For He gives to His beloved sleep.”
It does not mean life will be easy, but God does promises to give us peace in the mist of the problems of raising a family in this world.”

It is not easy for a family to live an intentional life but we don’t have to do it alone. Give your life, your spouse, and your children to God.

I DARE U...

Everyone wants to be loved and accepted by others. Rejection is a hard pill to swallow. However, when it comes to living a Christian life, it is better to stand out as an odd ball, pleasing God, than to fit in and be loved by man. Don't get me twisted, it is not necessarily in the way we look or what we say but it has a lot to do with the way we live our lives. On Sunday, my pastor challenged us to live in such a way that when we leave the presence of others, they may say, "Surely s/he is a child of God!" I dare you and ME to be different... reflecting Christ!

I have not blogged in a minute… actually in months. These last few months I have been so swapped with work and getting ready for the Celebration Bridal Show at the Civic Center (January 04, 2009) that I just couldn’t find the time to blog. However, I am here in NYC visiting my family for the holidays, and it is the last day the year, which happens to be a beautiful snowy and extremely cold day, making it the perfect day to SHOOT. Well, that was a given, it is always a perfect day to shoot but I meant to say blog.

Yes We Can… do all things through CHRIST!

Lately the phrase, “Yes We Can”, has given many people around the world a sense of empowerment and hope. However, this phrase has always been the response of Christians to Paul’s declaration in Philippians 4:13: “I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me.” And the People of God say, “YES WE CAN!” Now that’s empowerment... do you have it?

My 31st Birthday – Glory to God!

Thank God for allowing me to see another birthday!

I recently started re-reading, The Purpose Driven Life book and this morning I happened to be on Chapter 7: The Reason for Everything. This chapter and its’ study-verse surely reminded me that:

“Everything comes from God alone. Everything lives by His power, and everything is for His glory.” – Romans 11:36

Yes, I came from God. I live by His power and for His glory! On this 31st birthday, I would just like to give God all the honor and glory for using me, sustaining me, guiding me, blessing me, and allowing me to see another birthday! I am truly blessed and thankful for this day.

My New Toys!

As stated in my last post, I attended a photography workshop a few weeks ago, that was in my opinion a wise investment. It greatly enhanced my skills as a photographer and that was my first step in producing better images and products to my customers.

Improved Skills + What? = Improved Products and Services

This week, I have taken yet another in my journey of continuous improvement in this business and ministry. After extensive research, prayer, and money crunching, I decided to upgrade my primary camera to Nikon’s latest full-frame professional, digital SLR camera, the D700. I love many things about this camera but my favorite feature is the definitely the extended ISO range of 100 to 25,800 – allowing me to capture good quality images without a flash in low light situations. To add the icing on the cake, I also purchased one of Nikon’s fastest and sharpest lens, the 24-70mm f/2.8G lens.

I have a wedding shoot this weekend, so stay tuned for images from my new toys… I can’t wait for play time!

A few years ago I had the opportunity to visit my birth-land, Guyana, South America . For me it was a trip of reflection on the goodness of God. As I walked around my old neighborhood, it was obvious that most people didn’t have the luxuries that even the average American takes for granted. HOWEVER they seemed to be content, less stressed, and more expressive of the goodness of God in every aspect of their lives. The theme was common everywhere I went: In spite of…God is good and He is in control!

10 years and still going strong in LOVE!

This is my third time photographing this fun and loving family in recent years but this time was extra special because they were celebrating 10 years of marriage. It was too cool to photograph them all lovey-dovey: kissing, whispering in each other’s ears, giggling, and inseparable as if they were newly-weds. I must admit that they sure made that GREAT LEAP OF FAITH, Marriage, look very attractive... maybe ONE day! :-)

We had a little time before their guest came to the celebration so I ask the couple to join me outside in the yard for a quick photo-shoot… here are a few of my favorite images:

Veronica asked me to shoot the wedding with her as she was literally 3 days away from giving birth to her new baby boy! Yes, he is going to have a hard working baby. You won’t find him in the playroom… he’ll be out somewhere working at age 3. LOL!

Okay I am not going to joke on her baby since I am appreciative of her asking me to help her shoot the wedding! She even said she may consider working with a brother in the near future IFFFFFF she like the photos I took. :-) Well, I hope you like Ms. King!

Baby Olivia is Here!!!

A word from God...

Recently, my co-worker, was in prayer at her Wednesday night Bible Study Group and she was lead to pause her prayer to write down these words:

“I am closer to you than your breath. Close your eyes, stop your thoughts and believe in me with humble heart. Then you will be amazed how clear you see and feel me even with a closed heart and mind.”

After the prayer session, she shared it with the group and immediately one of the ladies in the group started crying profusely. When asked what was wrong, this lady replied, “Before I came to this prayer group I went to the Chapel and I prayed asking God: why can’t I see or feel You in my life? You seem to be so far from me? God please show your self to me, my heart and mind seems to be closed from you.” You see, the words that my co-worker was led to write down were the answers to this woman’s prayer.

Just in case you didn’t know that God is real and that He hears and answers our prayers… now you know… believe that!!!

“… I will never leave you, nor forsake you.” – Hebrews 13:5

Above are a few of my favorite Worship-Art Images from a recent photo-shoot. As part of my ministry and following my studio Motto: Putting God’s Gift to Work… I love to add scriptures to my images. Two weekends ago I went home to NYC to visit the fam. During my uneventful, but rather relaxing trip I got the opportunity to photograph my good friend from college for the cover shot of his second CD release. We met up in Harlem and within half an hour we had completed the shoot with much success. Selecting a few of my favorite shots to share on this blog was quite a challenge. Therefore, it will be interesting to see which shot he actually chooses for the front cover.

TU Scholarship: Thanks for your support!!!

This post comes with much love and appreciation to everyone who donated money or purchased one of my art prints in support of my Tuskegee University scholarship goal of $500. I didn’t make the goal mainly due to my late insight of the vision, however I was able to present a lucky student who also happens to be from Huntsville (photo above) a $300 scholarship on July 11th, 2007. After discussing the idea with the computer science faculty we decide to present it in the form of a book voucher scholarship. The young lady was very excited and thankful… so once again I would like to say thank you, thank you, thank you for making my vision of creating and selling my photography-art for a cause, a reality. AKA Angel Pageant: Father-Daughter Tea

This is my second year doing the photography for the Angel Pageant, which is sponsored by the Rho Chi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. It is always a pleasure to work with the coordinators of the program. I really enjoy photographing all the events of the pageant but my favorite is the Father-Daughter Tea. The activities of this event include the Angel Wings ceremony in which the girls receive an angel wings’ pin and ivy halo from their fathers signifying beauty, strength and endurance. The girls also presented their fathers with pink roses, enjoyed a dance together, and posed for their photos together at a beautiful coffee table setup.

Much respect goes out to these dads and the many others out there who dare to be present as a positive light in their kids’ lives. Also, I would like to give thanks to the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for creating an opportunity that fosters such an experience. Photos for a cause...

This past weekend I was blessed to lend a helping hand to my friend Jessie Patterson at a fundraising social to raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in honor of Chenetia Witcher. At the social I was asked to setup a backdrop to take photos of the guests and sell my other artwork as well. Half of all the proceeds earned were donated to help meet her goal of $2000.

Jessie, I just want to say thank you for being a part of the solution and for inviting me to be a part of the event. I welcome the opportunity to fellowship, eat, laugh, and support a good cause anytime. Keep up the good work and may God continue to bless you in all your endeavors!

First thanks for all your comments and suggestions on the “Art under Construction” post. Special thanks for the suggestions that led me to combine the two photos into the one shown above. I really liked how it turned out and as Blogger LV pointed out it: The gray tone of the image represents the actions of the thief and the green tree represents the life giving of God. I like, I like, I like…

So hopefully the customer who originally requested the artwork also likes it… stay tune, I’ll be sure to let you know.

Art under Construction - * INPUT NEEDED *

Last week as I was selling my barber one of my art prints, a customer in the chair reached into his pocket and pulled out a piece of paper with the following scripture:

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” -- John 10:10

He asked if I could create him a print with the scripture. I told him that nothing immediately came to my mind, but I would work on it and get back to him. Anyway, as I was leaving church that same night I noticed the tree in the pictures above. It stood at the back of the church all lit up from the parking lot lights. I got my camera and took a photo of it.

It wasn’t until I sat down a few days later to brainstorm ideas for the photo that it dawn on me that the image I was looking for was already sitting on my memory card waiting to be downloaded and used to glorify God.

As you see above, I ended up creating two versions of the image…

The comment led me to really consider all that I am trying to do and all that I am actually accomplishing. To make a long story short, I hired someone to help me with the business. This much needed assistance will allow me the opportunity to keep the blog flowing with new write-ups at least once a week. So to you my anonymous friend, I say thank you for the post. 2006 Caribbean "Labor Day" Parade in Brooklyn

For those of you who know me… you know that every Labor Day weekend you can find me in New York visiting the family and enjoying the Caribbean weekend festivities that concludes on the Monday with the Big Parade in Brooklyn. Although I didn’t do much this year, I didn’t and couldn’t miss the parade because it actually occurs on the street my parents live on. I guess I am getting old because for the first year I didn’t feel the urge to join the parades… I was very satisfied standing on the side of the street taking photos of the beautiful costumes and eating good food!!!

Nationally Published = Increased Prices?

I was recently blessed with the opportunity to photograph Alabama A&M University’s new president and to have the photograph used in the August’s issue of Ebony Magazine article on HBCUs. This success led me to think that surely a nationally published photographer (HA HA!) is at least entitled to raise the very, very, very low priced photo packages he offers… what do you think? :-)

I was thinking at least by a few hundred dollars… sounds good? Naah, I am just kidding, just kidding. I promise, you will continue to receive my Ebony Magazine quality photographs at the family-member hook-up prices you have grown to expect from me… really!!! :-)

So I called up my good friend Shelly, to purchase a copy of his Jazz CD, titled “Shelly”, to use one of the tracks as the background music of my new website. Shelly and I agreed that he would give me the CD to use as needed if I took photos of his performance at the 2006 Jazz in June Concert in Big Spring Park. For those of you who do not know Shelly, he is a professional photographer and a very talented saxophonist.
